In it, the boys travel to visit their grandmother, who lives in a seaport on the Olympic Peninsula of Washington State. The boys embark on several adventures, exploring several local cultures. They happen upon a mysterious, Red-sailed Chinese Junk that has been stored in a local barn for over 100 years. They meet several people who teach them about ships, canoes, and boats. They learn about the history of Chinese culture on the Olympic Peninsula and of Native American culture. And they solve the mystery of the Red-sailed ship.
The children learn about local geology and waterways from their grandmother and participate in an annual canoe journey with regional tribes. And finally, they meet an old Norwegian fisherman who helps the boys solve the mystery of the red-sailed ship.
This book is appropriate for school-age children. It has 84 pages and 32 illustrations created by the author.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Ellen Margaret O’Shea was born in Oregon and grew up in a large family. She loved to make up and illustrate stories for her younger brothers and sisters. She continued to write and illustrate stories for other children in her life and for her daughters. Now she is writing and illustrating for a new generation: her grandchildren.
Ellen is an accomplished illustrator and has completed work for publications, greeting cards, and children’s books. She has sold her artwork at markets and galleries throughout the Pacific Northwest.
Ellen currently lives on an organic farm near Port Townsend, Washington. She lives with her partner Norm, their two border collies “Lucy” and “Thunder”, 3 chickens, and communities of frogs, salamanders, dragonflies, ducks, geese, wild fish, beavers, and other wildlife.
